First Image - First Day First Image
I want to talk about an image created by Laura Aguilar. Aguilar’s powerful, quietly beautiful photographs explored the lived realities of members of various marginalized groups, including women, lesbians, Latinas, the working class, fat people, and those with learning disabilities.
What do you see?
How does this image make you feel?
What do you think this artist is trying to say?
Why take a nude with a rock?
Why shoot daylight, in open shade?
How does this image explore the reality of being marginalized?
Does the fact that this is a self portrait change what you think this image means?
What else???

First Image - Abstraction
Abstract Image - Must be related to your theme
Create an abstract image that is related to the type of work you do. Look at the work of Ola Kolehmainen.
This assignment is for all students, and is designed to help you think of your work in terms of abstraction.
When you are able to break your work down into the most simple terms it will help you understand yourself
as an artist. If you shoot nature try macro. If you shoot people try blur. Find a way to break down what
you do to it's most simple form. If this image does not work for your series it may work for your other five
pieces, especially if the color and mood matches.

Photo Journalism - This is Us
Photojournalism- you are going to embed with a class and take pictures for two weeks. The goal is for you to tell a story about that major, or the office staff. Who are they, what do they do, and what does that look like. The purpose is not to get posed shots, but to get moments that tell us a story about what they are up to. This is your opportunity to create story and to create something that the school can use to tell our story.
Be patient and resist just taking pictures to take them. Wait for life to happen and capture it. The goal is not to create a bunch of images without feeling... feeling is everything. Have fun and become a fly on the wall.

Photo JOurnalism -
Now that you have spent time shooting in a safe invironment it's time to go out into your community and take pictures. Make sure to be safe and to choose to shoot something that is visually interesting. If you are a competitive fighter take us into your world. What does that world look like? Show us the people in motion.. Show us the supermarket, or your church, or your friends at the beach hanging out. Take us into your world and help us see what you see. The best moments are ones where some activity is taking place, and not just people sitting around. Tell us a story, and remember that the viewer has no other visual context than what you provide for us. Make us feel empathy, or make us want to go where you go. Photojournalism is about finding a story, and using image to tell it. Due date is week of Oct 24.

Advanced Composition Assignment
This assignment is designed to get you to look at not only the figures in an image, but also look at the negative space. If you look at the empty space in the image you will see that this space is what makes this image work so well. We see that the figure on the right is tall, but the fish on the left is more powerful because it is altered. Every detail in this image including the jacket of the figure on the right makes this image very interesting. In this assignment your challenge is to work with a model to create a interesting composition that tells a story. Often times what makes our images not work is that we forget that simple can be very beautiful, and the image gets cluttered with objects that don't support the concept.
After you receive feedback on your first image you create use the criticism to create a second image. You can redo your original idea or you can create a second image using a new idea. When ever you do an assignment you should make sure that the work is worthy of your portfolio. If the image is not good enough for your portfolio it's not good enough to turn in for an assignment. The best way to become an amazing artist is to use the feedback you receive to create something new. This assignment is to help you learn and grow as a photographer. Remember that an actor would not go on stage and play a part without practice. Your success is a direct result of your effort, and your response to failure. You can see failure as a path to success, or you can let it stop you from moving forward.

Advanced Lighting - White on White
Lighting an image is the most powerful part of what we do as photographers. Once you come up with what you want to say, choose the type of light that works best. This image is so complex that the lighting needed to be simple. The light fades to dark at the bottom of the image which keeps your eye on the figures faces. The hands are important so the photographer made sure that the image did not fade into black to soon. The figure on the left is brighter on purpose and not by accident. The twin on the left is the more outgoing, and nurturing sister. For this assignment your job is to find a person(s) that you want to photograph and create an image using lighting, and composition to tell a story about that person(s). Notice that all of the whites in this image are different values. If you want to make sure that the edges don't get lost you have to light the background seperate from the foreground.
Use Artist as Influence - Pick Name out of hat
1.) REPORT - Choose the name of a photographer out of a hat and write a short research report on that photograher. What type of work do they do, where are they from, what is their concept for the work you like? You can choose a series or you can just write about the artist in general. What types of experiences are they drawing from to create their work.
2.) CREATE - Create an image based on the work of the photographer you picked. You can use their concept or you can just try to copy the look of their images. This assignment is to give you a chance to do something that you may not normally try.
3.) REFLECT - What did you learn and how can you use what you learned in your work?

Shutter Speed - Blur
Shutter Speed / Blur
Create an image that has subjects that are both in focus and blury. Use a slow shutter speed to captue a ghost like image, and make sure something in the image is in focus. This will require that you and the in focus objects stay very still. You will need to use a shutter speed as low as 15 and that means you need to use a tripod. You can shoot in color or black and white. Think about the story you want to tell and you may want to look at the work of Robert Parke Harrison. Use the reflections guidelines to write about your image.

Photo Journalism - Narritive
Photo Journalism - Look again at the work of Darcy Padilla and create a series of images that tell a story. The story does not have to be sad, and it should not be set up. Telling a story is about connecting so please wait for the moment when the story is clear. In the picture above the love that this father has for his child is clear. Along with that love you can see heartbreak, and sadness. We all have stories and we are surrounded by stories, and it is our stories that connect us to each other. We can relate to each other because of our stories. For this assignment you need to be patient and you have to connect and have compassion for the person or animal that you are telling the story about.
Create a image related to gender - or Fine Art Piece that is about gender and identity.

Pillow Talk Video Assignment
Use the "Pillow Talk" video as your guide to create an image. This assignment is to help you to "STEAL LIKE AN ARTIIST". Make sure that you look carefully at the video and find out who inspired Bouha Kazmi to create these different scenes. A photographer that comes to mind for me is James Fee. He may not have used James as an inspiration, but the person that influenced him may know the work. Imagery does not come from thin air, and it is our job to know where art origionates so that we can give credit to them. Write a reflection to talk about why you choose the look you used. Grade your attempt and reflect on what you did, and what you can do better.
Still Life Image
Still Life - This image should be real. Down set this still life up, or if you do make sure that it looks real. The image should tell a story about the objects. In the top image the natural light if creating a mood that makes us want to know more about WHERE, WHY. In this image we have a since of time, and place, and the object tell us a story. Don't just take an image of an old shoe without having a background that supports the story of the shoe. Is it in a gym, or a bedroom. This assignment is to help you create a narrative that sets the scene for the portrait. Think of it as a picture of what is to come. Lots of movies start out with a shot of an object or place. The lighting and composition will help set the mood. Look at the images of Flor Garduno, and see that they tell a story about where she is from and the objects that surround her. This project is about using light to create mood, it's about telling a story, and it's about finding objects that are beautiful. Don't just shoot any object. Look for objects with meaning to you and your family, and that tell a story about culture... time.
Aspects of the Photographic Industry - Planning, business management, finance, production, labor issues, self promotion, community and environmental issues. This assignment is to create a resume, fill out and application, and research one of the topics above and present the information to the class in a class presentation. This is a group project that will require research, and interaction with a professional. You can research the information, call and expert, or use email to communicate. You can use professional magazine sites like PDN or you can research a photographers website.

Using HDR to increase values - This technique required a tripod
Using Advanced Camera Techniques: Research blending or HDR techniques and use this technique on your next image. If you have a camera at home I you can shoot downtown, or around your neighborhood. If not I would like you to do a portrait of a classmate outside. Keep in mind that you have to use a tripod for this picture so if you don't have one at home you can't do the assignment at home.
Step 1: go to this website and read about what HDR is.
Step 2: Look at tutorial prior to shooting.
Step 3: Shoot image on a tripod and make at least 8 different exposures. The image has to be exactly the same so make sure nothing moves. The person and the background have to match exactly so don't let anything move. Make sure some of the images are under exposed and some are normal and some are over exposed.
Step 4: Use the blending modes to create a image with multiple exposures so that the lights and darks all show up.
Step 5: Use the blending modes second tutorial to enhance even more.
Write a reflection: Use the guidelines on this site.
Hint: It is much easier to shoot a landscape. Make sure the lighting is dramatic, and it has to be an outdoor shot. Sunny weather is best, but dramatic clouds work well too.

San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art Assignment
Assignment: Choose one of the artists that you saw in La Jolla or Downtown to use as an inspiration. You are not to copy what the artist did but respond to what you saw. First start with what some of the first ideas that came to mind and then refine the idea, and brainstorm new ideas based on what you saw. Remember that the name of the theme of both shows is "Perspective". What does that mean to you? If you know you are going to need something that we may not have like spray paint let me know now so I can order that for you. Think about what you saw and how the work made you feel. What were some of the ideas, and what were you drawn to. Here is a link to the museum website for a recap on the artists. You are going to show your work at the museum so you have to make sure you know how the work will look finished, printed, and hung... or not.. The show date is March 19th at the La Jolla location.
Humor and Art
BEING FUNNY IS NOT EASY! Research the devices that are used to create a funny narrative. For example you can use a paradoxical device, or a pun. Now that you have had a chance to see the show in La Jolla that is based on humor it is a good time to think about how to create images that explore this theme. It is not easy to create an image that your audience will find humorous, but it is a theme worth investigating. Humor speaks to the human condition and our need to figure out a way of understanding and dealing with the seriousness of the human condition. We hear bad news all the time and the worries of the world can weigh heavily upon us. This is your chance to have fun, and make us laugh. Go back to the SD MOCA site and look at the work. When looking at the work try making a list of what is funny about the image. Make sure to look at the compositional elements in addition to the content. The way the image is cropped, or the point of view may be the only device that was used. The image above for example is funny because of the elements in the image like the microphone that give us a hint of where this pose is taking place. In this image the place is important. Be creative and have fun!! Use the reflection guidelines to reflect on your work, and be ready to present your work to the class in a class critique.
Photography Contest
We have been invited to enter a district contest. The three categories are black & white, color and smart phone. The images are due May 18th and need to be turned in to me. Make sure that the images are as big as possible. Only 10 images will be submitted so make sure that you turn in your best work. The 5 best images will win awards including equipment from Nelson Photo. This is also a class assignment so please make sure that you post your images on your blog for class credit. The judges will be looking for content, the elements and principles of design, and technical skill.
Do your best and best of luck.

Museum Of photographic arts - self portrait
The San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts has invited SCPA to join their student exhibition. SCPA can submit 10 self portraits that will be judged and included in their 2016 student show. The topic is self. Art historians have documented a very long history of the self portrait, and many photographers have taken self portraits. One of the most famous living self portrait photographers is Cindy Sherman. Other artists to look at are Vivian Maier, Jun Ahn, Robert Maplethorpe, Alex Soth, Sally Mann, Carrie Mae Weems, Lee Friedlander, Jen Davis, Imogene Cunningham, and many others. This is not a selfie, which is far less formal. For this image I would like you to tell us something about yourself. Put yourself in a place or costume that tells us something about who you are. The purpose of this assignment is for you connect to your audience in a creative way.
Man or Nature - Imagine a planet Crying out for help
Is Our Planet In Trouble?
The most important stories in the news are the stories about our planet. Where have the bees gone? Do we need polar ice, or is warming just fine? Are we killing ourselves with our technologies and our apatite for more? It is fine that the population has doubled in my lifetime? What happens if our kelp is tainted with radiation from Japan? Make images that show how you feel when you hear these stories. What do you think? Do you think about it? This is your chance to make us think, feel, hope, and dream. This is your chance to express your feelings about the most pressing issue of the 21st century. The issue is global warming, pollution, radiation poisoning, tainted water, drought, the extinction of species like bees. We hear stories about the air quality in China being so bad that you can't see the house across the street. How do those images make you feel? What does it look like when we don't do anything? Will the planet survive or will man survive? Are we in a battle with nature? Create an image that will make us think about these issues. Is the issue worth going to jail over? Is it worth dying for? Imagine a planet crying out for help.... What would that image look like?

Using Overlap to create an interesting image
Overlapping Images - Go to the following site and look at how these photographers used overlap to make an interesting image. You can use scale, space, and overlap to create interesting images. This is a great trick that you can use to make an image that is more interesting. For this assignment I don't want you to use Photoshop. Just align the objects in your image to create interest. If you can get good at this it will make taking pictures much more fun. In this image you would need to make sure that you have infinite depth of field to that the man in window and the cars on the ground are all in focus. If they person is too close to you this picture would not be possible. Look at the examples and come up with your own ideas. HAVE FUN!
