Anti-Fashion Project
What is Fashion?
Find an area of interest, and create a magazine cover. Are you interested in cheap fashion that we wear for a short period and toss in the trash, or are you interested in fashion and gender bias. This assignment is to get you to think about the clothing you wear everyday on how it helps to define who you are and what you believe. Some of the fashion that gets created is only for the super rich, and that person may only wear that dress or outfit one time. What do you think about that?
Can fashion change the course of your life, or does it even matter? How much should clothing cost, and is having clothing a human right? Why even talk about, and make work about fashion? What types of fashion pictures do we see in magazines, and on TV and how do those pictures influence our fashion choices, eating choices, and change how you think about yourself. What is the message of those pictures, and should we censor them? This assignment is to give you a chance to think about a universal truth.... we all dress up prior to leaving our home. How to the choices we make shape our lives, and the community around us?

For this project you are expected to create an original work of art inspired by a 2 different artists.
+Bonus Points+ if your final work of art incorporates cycles in its theme.
Guidlines:
1. At least one of these artists should be a famous artist whose work is exhibited in a major art museum.
Museum of Modern Art - https://www.moma.org/artists?=undefined&page=2&direction=fwd
Guggenheim - https://www.guggenheim.org/artwork/artist
Whitney Museum - https://whitney.org/artists
The Broad - https://www.thebroad.org/art/browse
The Smithsonian American Art museum - https://americanart.si.edu/
The Art Institute of Chicago - https://www.artic.edu/collection
2. The second artist can be an unknown artist OR yourself.
If you are the second artist, you must provide a work of art to serve as inspiration for your final piece.
3. Choose a work of art from each artist, upload it on your website, and write a brief description as to why you chose this artist/piece and why it inspired you and what elements you plan on using for your final work of art. ( https://milesphoto2.weebly.com/elements--principles-of-design.html)
+Group exercise+ you and two other students will discuss your choices and how to incorporate cycles into final work of art.
4. Create an original work of art that incorporates the styles and/or the visual strategies the two artists you chose used in their pieces.
5. Critique.
Describe:
What does the work of art look like? (Use the elements of design here) LINK
Does it borrow from BOTH artist chosen? How?
Analyze:
How is the work organized? (Use the principles of design) LINK
Did the artist considered the composition? How?
Interpret:
Does the work of art have a message? (cycles)
What changes could help strengthen the message?
Judge:
What do you think of the work? (Remember be thoughtful and constructive they will see this!)
What would you do to improve it?

CYCLES
Due: March 24/25
CREATING THE CONCEPT:
TO BEGIN...
1. With a partner or two try and define cycles, write it down your definition on a shared piece of paper.
2. Search for the dictionary definition of cycles.
- How does your definition and the dictionary definition differ?
3. Now write down as many words or short phrases that have to do with cycles *no wrong answers*
4. Share with the class.
RESEARCH

- Link 1
- Link 2
CLUSTER DIAGRAM STEPS
Independently on a separate piece of paper...
Step 1: Pick a cycle to explore. This cycle should be placed in the middle of the diagram.
Step 2: Brainstorm around this main idea and come up with sub-topics related to it. Place them around the center.
Step 3: Brainstorm around each of the sub-topics and write down related ideas around them.
Step 4: Add as many layers as you want. However, use color-coding to emphasize each branch of thought. This will make it easier for you to read and understand the cluster diagram.
CYCLES QUESTIONS:
Independently on your website answer...
ADD A DEVICE:
Write at least a sentence that describes your idea. Put it on your Website.
Then choose one of these devices to put into your work. Put that word on your site and explain how you will use that device.
Paradox: appears contradictory, but implies some kind truth.
Allusion: indirectly refers to external people, events, or things, such as in the real world, or in another story.
Simile: directly compares two or more things.
Euphemism: describe something in a more pleasant or polite way. EX: “negative patient outcome.” means patient died
Foreshadowing: hint at what will happen next, or at some point, in the story.
Metaphor: A metaphor is an implicit comparison between two or more things. EX: “That woman is a devil in disguise.”
Hyperbole: extreme exaggeration of a real event or situation. EX: I’m so hungry, I can eat a whole cow.
Symbolism: something is used to represent something else, such an idea or concept.
Juxtaposition: Juxtaposition is when a writer places two contrasting concepts, people, or events directly side-by-side in a sentence or paragraph.
Irony: on the surface, to be the case, differs radically from what is actually the case. EX: The name of Britain’s biggest dog was “Tiny.
Personification: gives inanimate objects or inhuman beings (like animals) human characteristics or attributes. EX: Time waits for no one.
Oxymoron: a combination of contrasting, or opposite, Example: Bitter sweet, Awfully Good

Zine Creation - Hand Made Advertisement
A zine - derived from magazine - is an independently- or self-published booklet, often created by a single person. Zines are customarily created by physically cutting and gluing text and images together onto a master flat for photocopying, but it is also common to produce the master by typing and formatting pages on a computer. The end product is usually folded and stapled. Zines can be printed and bound in any manner.

The new administration has spoken about cutting funding to the arts. The funding goes to a number of places, but the bulk goes to the National Endowment for the Arts. If that funding goes away it will end a 50 year program started by President Lyndon Johnson. The goal was to make art accessible to all Americans, and not just to the rich. In order to create a poster you need to know more about who the NEA is. Please go to their website and research the organization, so that you can uderstand what the loss of this program would mean to this country. The image you create can be a photograph, an illustration, or a photo illustration. Once you have your image please create the final layout in InDesign, or Illustrator.

![Picture](/uploads/5/4/4/2/5442952/1048456.jpg)
Use your basic Photoshop to create a self promotional piece. I will give you examples and you will create you own. The piece should have your name, title, contact information including your weebly address. The images you use are suppose to get you work so make sure you use images that match the type of work you would like to be hired out to do. If you are a fine artist, put fine art images into the promo. If you like you can put your rates, or a short sentence about your work or your style. The purpose of this assignment is to get people to hire you so you want the piece to have a cool vibe. Be careful to make sure that you use colors that work together. Don't use bright pink if that color does not match the mood of the work. The fonts should be sophisticated and not look like something a little kid would choose.

Mixed Media - Cloth Project (21 things to overcome)
Mixed Media with photo on cloth. This assignment is designed to get you to rethink the printed image. Take a very high contrast image and print it on cloth, and then use some type of paper collage to create a narrative. The narrative is about you and who you are. You can be abstract or you can be more direct, but please make sure that you can give us a reason for everything in your image. As young artists we often forget that everything you include in an image matters. This piece must include the following materials -
String
Cloth
Paper
and a Collage
Take care not to make you work to busy or we may not be able to figure out what the main subject is. In this student example you can clearly see that the girl is the main subject.
